Om Shanti Om: Detailed Music Review

Om Shanti Om, the much awaited Bollywood movie is now the center of attention. Shah Rukh Khan starrer Om Shanti Om is considered to be one of the major hits of 2007. Not too many hit movies got released this year. So, fans are eagerly waiting for the movie. With an already-star debutant, Deepika Padukone, the movie can come with a big surprise to the fans. NO doubt, Shah Rukh Khan has very few flop movies to his credit but, it is Deepika Padukone whom the movie freak fans are more interested in. This model turned actress has already become a new craze in India.

With 2000 prints releasing in the opening day, the movie has already made a record of releasing highest number of prints in the opening day of the release. So, there is no chance to face financial lose for the move. Moreover, the music album of the movie has already received huge response from the fans. With some of the finest singers of present time, the music tracks could survive well in the market despite the strong challenge from Saawariya album. One can enjoy the different kinds of music in the album. Here, I am introducing the music tracks of the album with a short description for each below:

The Album:
Movie: Om Shanti Om
Music: Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjani, Pyarelal
Lyrics: Vishal, Kumaar, Javed Akhtar
Singer: Shreya Ghoshal, Shaan, Sonu Nigam, K.K., Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Richa Sharma, Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan, Sukhwinder Singh, Caralisa, Marianne D'Cruz, Nisha Mascarenhas, Rahul Saxena, and Abhijeet.

Song: Akhon Mein Teri
Lyrics: Vishal
Singer: KK
This is a romantic song with a light melody. To create the lightness, the composers used very simple instruments like acoustic guitar, and flute and ghatam
(it is actually earthenware used to store water), a South Indian musical instrument.
This is another example of the beautiful romantic melodies of Hindi music. The song is special for another reason; Vishal wrote the lyrics for the song. Earlier, KK has given us romantic songs like “Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai” (Gangster). Once again he has proven his indispensability for romantic songs.

Song: Dard-E-Disco
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Sukhwinder Singh
Background vocals: Marianne, Nisha and Caralisa
Just think, Vishal-Shekhar’s music album without any dance number; it is like a fast-food shop without any fast food, or a car without tire. So here is the disco track for you. The beginning tune resembles with “De de pyar de pyar de pyar de re...humein pyar de” from Amitabh Bachchan starrer, Sharabi. Another important feature of this song is the use Persian-Arabic style music. Javed Akhtar did not write his conventional poetic lyrics. He just wrote a catchy lyric that goes with the loud music and pace of the song. Sukhwinder Singh’s voice suits very well for this kind of high pitched songs. What the song lacks in music and lyric makes up with its spectacular view. In this song, Shah Rukh Khan displayed his six-packs. Considering the age of Shah Rukh, this is truly an amazing feat. Once again, Shah Rukh had proven that he still has flames inside him. Within the first week of its release, the song became a chart buster.

Song: Dard-E-Disco (Remix)
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Sukhwinder Singh
Background vocals: Marianne, Nisha and Caralisa
The remix version is created by DJ AKeel. This is a dance number but good to hear.

Song: Deewangi Deewangi
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Rahul Saxena
This song can be called the finishing touch of Farah Khan. In her 2004 movie, Main Hoon Na there was this song “Ye Fizayein.” The song was given at the end of the movie. The music was light yet energetic. “Deewangi Deewangi” also played the same role in this movie. Om Shanti Om involves both 70’s Bollywood and the present day Bollywood. The song also brings in all the famous movie actors and actresses of the 70’s and present day Bollywood. This type of song is a unique trademark of Shah Rukh Farha movie.

Song: Deewangi Deewangi (Rainbow mix)
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Rahul Saxena
If you like the normal version then I guarantee you that you would also like this rainbow version. The pace is quicker but that does not mar the energy and excitement of the music.

Song: Main Agar Kahoon
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal
Starting with the sound of bell, the mellow music will instantly touch your soul. This song will remind you the old romantic songs especially, Muhammad Rafi’s song. Sonu Nigam himself idolizes Muhammad Rafi and that is why he sang the song with great passion.

Song: Jag Soona Soona Lage
Lyrics: Kumaar
Singer: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Richa Sharma
This is a sad song based on classical Indian music. Just another typical sad song you will hear in Bollywood romantic movie. However, the music is very well composed and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is very good to hear.

Song: Dhoom taana
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Shreya Ghoshal, Abhijeet
The music will take to the Bollywood of 70’s and 80’s when Jeetendra, Sri Devi, Rekha used to rule the big screen. The main feature of the song is extensive use of dhol and ghungroo sounds. Famous music composer, Pyarelal, arranged the music for this song on special request from Farha and Vishal-Shekhar.

Song: Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Shaan
This is the climax song. The soft music and female background voice gives you a creepy feeling. The song reminds me of “Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha” from the Rishi Kapoor starrer Karz. The story of Karz was also based on reincarnation.

Song: Dastaan-E-Om Shanti Om (Remix)
Lyrics: Javed Akhtar
Singer: Shaan
Created by DJ Nikhil Chinnapa, Zoheb and DJ Naved, this fast paced version is good to hear.

Song: Om Shanti Om (Medley mix)
Created by Jackie V, the medley mix is the mixture of three songs: Dhoom Taana, Dard-E-Disco, and Om Shanti Om.

Song: Om Shanti Om (Theme Music)
This is the short version of Dastan-E-Om Shanti Om. The piano music evokes a feeling of sadness.
